American Cancer Society Foundation Elects New Officers
Atlanta 1999/12/01 -The American Cancer Society Foundation Board of Trustees has elected new officers for a one year term, concluding in November 2000.

John DiBiaggio, president of Tufts University in Boston, has been re-elected president. Prior to becoming president of Tufts in 1992, Dr. DiBiaggio served as president of Michigan State University from 1985 to 1992 and as president of the University of Connecticut from 1979 to 1985. He holds ten honorary degrees and is the recipient of numerous honors and awards. Dr. DiBiaggio has been an active American Cancer Society Volunteer and has served as president of the Michigan Division.

Irwin Belk of Charlotte, North Carolina, retired president of the Belk Group of Stores, has been re-elected vice president. Mr. Belk is a former North Carolina State Senator and currently serves on the US Olympic Committee. He was appointed by President Clinton as the United States Public Delegate to the 54th United Nations General Assembly.

Arnold A Portigal of Phoenix, Arizona, was elected treasurer. Mr. Portigal is president of Genevieve Financial Inc. of Canada and Genevieve Holdings of Arizona, Ltd. He has been involved in the development of health care facilities in Western Canada since the 1970s and served as chairman of the board of the Manitoba Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation until his move to Arizona in 1994. He acts as the Foundation Board liaison to the Southwest Division of the American Cancer Society, which includes Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico.

Ralph Destino of New York City, chairman emeritus of Cartier, Inc., was elected secretary. He is active in many civic, charity, and cultural organizations, including the Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District, the United Way of New York City, and the Fifth Avenue Association. From 1985 until 1998, he served as chairman of the board of the American Cancer Society (NYC Division). He continues as chairman of the New York City Council.

Tom Moran, chief executive officer at Mutual of America Life Insurance Company, was elected trustee liaison to the American Cancer Society, Inc. Mr. Moran is vice chairman of the board of the Medical Information Bureau and sits on numerous corporate and civic boards of directors, including the Life Insurance Council of New York, the National Center for Disability Service and the United Way of New York City. He is also a member of the Consultors Committee for the School of Arts and Sciences of Manhattan College, his alma mater.

The Foundation was organized in 1992 as the capital gift and endowment arm of the American Cancer Society. To date over $44 million has been raised to support cancer control programs.

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service.
